The El Dorado varsity volleyball team won Thursday’s home conference against Cordova 3-0 (25-3, 25-15, 25-12) and Tuesday’s home conference match against Liberty Ranch of Galt by a score of 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-22).

El Dorado celebrated Senior Night with Mrella Talavera, Holly Wold, Caitlin Dillon, Kendall Curtis, Julia Somera and Danae Ford taking most of the play time.

In Thursday’s match Dillon scored 6 kills, Somera and Talavera posted 7 digs, Wold served 5 aces and Ford tallied 4 assists.

Curtis led the team in scoring with 7 kills against the Cordova Lancers.

Senior opposite hitter Curtis scored on a kill shot in Tuesday’s tight third match to help the El Dorado Cougars take a 24-22 advantage late in the game against the Liberty Ranch Hawks putting them away one point later.

Ask the El Dorado coach about Curtis and you will get an earful and a heart full of admiration.

It’s not just what she does on the court that Pananganan appreciates, but what she says during the time outs. He doesn’t even bother to stop her so he can coach because it’s exactly what he would say to the team.

“The key for this team is us working together as a team and bringing each other up when we are down,” said Curtis. “It’s fun to motivate people, help your teammates and watch them grow.”

Union Mine keeps pace

Also in this week’s Sierra Valley Conference action Union Mine defeated Galt 25-10, 25-2, 25-7 on Thursday evening to remain in first place.

It was Senior Night for Emma Piazza, Zoey Eckroth, Jenna Matheson, Taylor Coate, and Jaryn Trulli.  Taylor Coate had 5 kills and 7 assists. Trulli tallied 20 assists and Hailey Coil had 9 kills.

“The team played well and had very few unforced errors tonight,” said Union Mine head coach Laurie Hudson. “Senior Night is always an emotional night and you never really know how the girls will respond to the festivities. These girls embraced the night and were outstanding.”

On Tuesday night the D’backs won its match against Cordova 25-14, 24-5, 25-8.  Kierstin Parker served 12 aces and Jenna Matheson added 6 aces. Hailey Coil scored 7 kills while Taylor Coate and Jaryn Trulli had 7 assists a piece.

“Excellent serving by Kierstin Parker,” said Hudson. “Solid serving game by all with excellent hitting by Hailey Coil.”

The victory is their sixth straight heading into the final stretch of league play.

With the victories both squads remain tied for first place in the Sierra Valley Conference with one league game to go on their schedules.

“If we both win out we end up tying out,” said El Dorado head coach Kalani Pananganan. “But it comes down to head-to-head competition. And either way both teams have done great. I don’t mind sharing it with Laurie, because she has been doing a really good job over there in the past few years. So we’re happy to see that team pushing everyone around this year.”
